Without fail, both of my boys have gone through a phase when they start to become more fearful at bedtime. Any parent of little ones knows how tiring this can be on everyone. Thankfully, there are a few practical steps, like using GoodNites Bedtime Pants and having a special bedtime item, that you can take to help calm the bedtime worries
A few things tend to cause anxiety within the kids at bedtime: fear of darkness/being alone and/or fear of wetting the bed. Depending on the personality of the child, these stressors can accelerate quickly.
While there are a few different tricks that we have tried with our boys, one thing that has helped has been giving them something to snuggle with. They all have their special stuffed animals and they also have individual blankets. These blankets even went on our two-week road trip with us recently. We stayed in a few different locations and each time, it helped to have the familiar item (and of course the beloved stuffed animal with them). Another thing that is very helpful to use at home and on road trips are disposable GoodNites bed mats. These are such a practical item that all parents need to have on hand. I honestly wish I would have found them sooner for the sake of our mattresses.
The fun thing about making your own blanket is that you can do this activity with your kids.
(1) Head to Wal-Mart to pick out the fleece material. We use a solid color on the bottom and a print on the top. It is a fun way to incorporate something your child is loving (example: one of my boys have animals on his). 1 1/2 yards of fabric is perfect for a toddler sized blanket.
(2) Lay the material out on the floor. Put the solid on the bottom and the print on top of it and start cutting.
(3) Start to tie the pieces together creating knots. I like to cut a few and then tie so things do not get tangled up. Once you have all pieces cut and tied, you are finished and ready for some bedtime snuggles.
While the blanket helps give comfort, GoodNites Bedtime Pants can help eliminate anxiety about bedwetting. When you are at Wal-Mart gathering your material for the blanket, you can also pick up some GoodNites Bedtime Pants.
There are also a few character choices for boys and girls, such as IronMan or Disney Fairies. Since using the Bedtime Pants, nighttime accidents have been extremely rare. There is a sense of being a big kid since the Bedtime Pants are different from diapers- they look and feel like real underwear so any shame or worry about wearing them is gone.
Remember though, accidents do and will happen! Children cannot control this and many have weekly accidents for quite some time. This is why using an item like GoodNites bed mats is helpful. Our waterproof mattress pad recently stopped being so waterproof and the bed mats have been the perfect substitution. I love that they are disposable and waterproof.
