Our first beach trip with kids started eight years ago when my oldest was just a few months old. When you live on the coast, it becomes a necessity to figure out the best ways to manage the beach and kids. Looking back, I can remember many beach trips where we brought way too many things and were extremely stressed. There was no relaxation, just constant stress. Over these eight years, I have learned a few tricks and have put together some tips for  your next beach trip with kids.

Keep it simple with the sand toys

Have you ever brought a bag full of every possible sand toy? If you have, then you know how very few of them get used. Last year we started something new. I bring a bucket and shovel per child. Then a few cars or Barbies. That is it. The kids always  have so much fun exploring and digging in the sand with the few things we bring.

Bring Ziploc bags

Ziploc bags can be lifesavers at the beach! Use one for your phone to keep it safe. Use another one per child for them to keep their treasures in. Think ahead and write their names on the bags. Your time will be stress free without having to keep track of everyone’s little shells.

Put the sunscreen on at home

Once we get out to the beach, the kids scatter. The water calls them in and the sand is begging to be dug in. Putting the sunscreen on at home can be a huge key to a stress free beach trip with kids. Since we have sensitive skin, I always am looking for a good sunscreen for sensitive skin. Blue Lizard® Austrailian Sunscreen is a great fit as it is a brand trusted by dermatologists and pediatricians and can easily be found at Wal-Mart stores. My husband and I use the Blue Lizard® Sensitive and our kids can use Blue Lizard® Baby. Note: Make sure to check with your pediatrician before using any sunscreen on a child younger than 6 months old.  We bring the sunscreen with us in our bag, so we can make sure to reapply as needed! I love that we can relax and enjoy the sun because Blue Lizard® provides all the coverage we need to stay safe from the sun.  Right now you can join iBotta and $4.00 when you purchase Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen – Sensitive, 5 oz. bottle only.

Pack back up swim suits and/or clothes

This tip is mainly important with little kids. Accidents happen and sometimes a little one just does not want to stay wet. An extra suit or outfit does not take up much space. To make things even simpler, put the clothes in a large Ziploc bag to keep them dry.

Let go of expectations and have fun.

The beach with little ones is an adventure. The best thing I have learned is to let go of what I expect will happen, and embrace the moments. There will be some tears and some laughter. When we relax, we are able to have fun instead of stressing over everything that goes wrong.

  1. Great tips! I always pack too many sand toys. My husband told me we need to drastically cut back this year…haha! And I second the baggies. I took them last year and used them for everything!
