Check out the best decluttering and organizing tips!
We are rounding up the best decluttering and organizing tips to help you kick off the new year with! As we start this year, many of us are jumping into de-cluttering and organization. I am a big fan of eliminating the clutter which is why I host the Clear the Clutter Challenge every year with Jaclyn.
However, I know that decluttering and organizing can be overwhelming and sometimes we can make it harder than it needs to be.
The Best Decluttering and Organizing Tips
Focus on one space at a time.
I can tend to be a little unfocused at times and hop from space to space. What I have found to be helpful is to focus on one room at a time. I follow the Clear the Clutter Calendar to give me bite-sized tasks.
Purchase bins and containers AFTER you declutter.
It is so tempting to head to the store and grab up all of the cute bins and organizing systems. However, the best way is to declutter your home and then purchase the bins and containers. If you purchase things ahead of time, you may find you actually need a different style bin or you may even realize you already have something you can use!
How do you do this? Start by decluttering each space and use a notebook to list out what you need after you declutter the space.
Then move onto decluttering the next space. As you declutter, put any bins or baskets you are not using in a pile in a place that will be out of the way. As you declutter, keep an eye out for containers that are no longer being used that you could repurpose into another space.
Once you are finished with the entire house, if you did not find what you needed already in your home, you can head to the store and get what you need! This way you are not spending money on something you may already have.
Let things go.
It can be hard to let go of stuff. Think about what will matter when you are 80. I think the photos will matter and written memories. All of the clutter, probably not. If you are not sure about getting rid of something, set it in a box. Set a reminder in your phone for 2 weeks. If you still do not use the item when the 2 weeks are over, get rid of it.
Empty everything out of cabinets, closets, etc.
It is hard to declutter if you just peek in a closet and grab out a few things. The best way is to completely empty the space and then sort through the items. As you do this, you can then put into piles: keep, trash, donate.
Store things where you actually use them.
For a while, I had all of our medicine in the hall closet. However, this made zero sense because I needed the vitamins in the kitchen for the morning. As a solution, I created a space in the kitchen for vitamins. We want to make it easy to put items back so work with your schedule and rhythms.
