Welcome back to the Clear the Clutter challenge! Since the focus is on clothes, I wanted to share about building a wardrobe you love. As a mom, I believe it is important to get up and get dressed for the day. Whether you are putting on a business suit or yoga pants and a tee shirt, what you wear has the potential to motivate you. When I wake up and get ready for the day, I feel ready for anything (yes even the tantrums).
Since I know this area can be a struggle, I am sharing my tips for building a wardrobe you love!
Go through your closet once a season.
At the start of every season, I take everything out of my closet. It all goes on my bed. Then I proceed to try the clothes on. Here is my big rule:
If it is damaged, does not fit right, does not make me feel good, it goes in the donate pile.
Friends, we do not need to hold onto material things. Trust me, I know this can be so hard because you have those jeans from pre-baby years hiding in the back of the closet. I am not saying you will never be in that size again. What I AM saying is that there is freedom in having a closet of clothes you actually love and want to wear.
Now look at the clothes you have left.
Do you have ten white tees or just one pair of jeans? Where is there too much and where is there too little?
Write down any clothing basics you need.
Once you are all finished, put the clothing back. If you are like me, you will have it sorted by sleeve type.
Do this same process with all of your clothes. Yes, that means your underwear drawer, the athletic clothes, and your shoes.
Now that you have the donate pile, you can either try to sell to a place like Thread Up, donate to Goodwill, or have a yard sale.
Build your wardrobe you love and want to wear.
When I did this a couple months ago, it left me with very few pieces. At first I was nervous but then I realized I could build my wardrobe over time. I love using Stitch Fix to do this and just added a gorgeous yellow sweater to my closet last month.
Even though my clothing options may be limited as I am working on building up my wardrobe, I am realizing something. I love the clothes I do have.
Mamas, it is a simple thing, but having a closet of clothes you actually like and want to wear is like a small form of self care. I recently added a tee shirt from Cameo & Company and one from Heart Work Tees. They are tee shirts but they bring me so much joy.
Keep a list of your clothing needs in your purse.
This is so helpful for when you are out and about. Instead of trying to remember whether you needed khaki shorts or jean shorts you will just look at your list.
Are you ready to build a wardrobe you love? I cannot wait to hear how it goes!
