Create a capsule wardrobe and learn how to simplify your wardrobe in just five steps!
A capsule wardrobe is a recent change I have implemented that has helped me thrive as a mom. Motherhood is a mixture of the deep stuff and the surface stuff, which is why today I want to talk all about simplifying our wardrobes. How does this mix in with thriving motherhood? Well, I believe that once we dig through the deep core issues, we then have to find ways to create simplicity and reduce overwhelm.
The truth is that our wardrobes can overwhelm us. We either feel like we have nothing to wear, live in yoga pants, or are frustrated because nothing fits. When the closet becomes a place of overwhelm, it is time to step into action.
One way I have cultivated simplicity in my life is by creating a capsule wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobe is a small, curated, styled, and comfortable closet filled with only items you love, make you feel great, and coordinate together.
The goal here is for you to be able to open your closet and easily pick out something to wear. As a mom who stays home, I have found it vital for me to get dressed every single day. While I do wear yoga pants some days, I have found that I just feel better and ready for life when I am put together for the day.
How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Go through your closet.
The first step is to take all of your clothes out of your closet and dresser. Go through them and sort into three piles:
- Love it
- Maybe like it
- Donate/Sell/Trash
As you go through the clothes be honest with yourself! As hard as it is, let go of the sentimental and focus on keeping what you really love and will wear.
Figure out your look.
I recently came across this amazing capsule wardrobe planner. You can print it off and use it. I just love it! This will help you think realistically about what your wardrobe should include.
Try on the clothes you do have.
Now that you have a general idea of the style you are loving, try on the clothes you have. Before you head shopping, you want to see what items you already have. This is when you try on the love it and maybe like it piles.
As you try on the clothes make sure they actually fit and that you will wear them. Now, this will be hard but I want you to focus on dressing the size that you actually are right now. Not the size you used to be or hope to be. Dress your current size so you will feel good!
Get on Pinterest
Before I head to the store, I love to get on Pinterest to put together a general plan. You can create a board just for the current season. Pin clothing that you like. One thing to keep in mind is to look for clothes that you will actually wear. While I may love a cute business outfit, I have to remember it is not something I will ever wear.
Create a capsule wardrobe.
Now it is time to put your current seasonal capsule wardrobe together! I am currently working on putting together my fall/winter one.
Keep a list in your purse or in the notes section of your phone so you stay on task when shopping.
Now you have a capsule wardrobe! You can say goodbye to the closet overwhelm and get dressed without stressing every day.
