Decluttering toys before Christmas may sound overwhelming, but these quick tips make it easy to organize the toys before the holidays arrive!
Taking a minute and focusing on decluttering toys before Christmas may not sound like the most exciting thing but it is one of those things that you will be glad you did! Christmas is just a week away! I can hardly believe this and feel like time has flown by. One thing I wanted to cross off my to-do list was to go through my kids’ toys and clear out anything they no longer play with.
As I have shared before, we do not have a play room so it seems like the toys can quickly take over our home. However, even if you have a play room, it is still a good idea to declutter before Christmas.

Go through the toys ahead of time.
One thing that has worked well for us is for me to take a little bit of time to go through things before I involve them in the process. During this declutter session, I remove any broken toys and trash so it is not as overwhelming when the kids are part of the process.
Taking the time to go through the toys by myself has been a game-changer for us. I usually set aside a pile of “suggested” donations. Many times, the kids will add to this pile.
Involve your kids.
After you do a quick run-through of things, involve your kids in the process. I like to remind them that they are going to be getting new things soon. We talk about donating the toys to someone else and being intentional with the space we have.
I do suggest you do this on a Saturday morning. I have tried doing this before in the evening and the kids were tired. It turned into a session of chaos rather than decluttering and organizing.
Make note of what is not working well.
A week before Christmas is not the time to revamp a bedroom or playroom. However, as you are in the space you may notice certain things are not working well. Make note of this and put a reminder in your planner or phone to go back to this space in January.
Take care of paper clutter.
We had a lot of paper clutter in the room. I tossed some items and stored some pieces in notebooks that the kids have. I also put some of the artwork in their memory boxes. Another thing you can do is create an art display or frame some of their art pieces.
