Seven first day of school traditions that all families will love!
Do you have any first day of school traditions? I love the nostalgia of traditions and creating them with my family. Growing up, I savored Christmas traditions and now, as a mom, I find myself loving traditions even more. As we enter into the back-to-school season, I have been planning our first day of school. This year we will have one child in public school and two children being homeschooled. The traditions I am sharing can be used no matter where your child is attending school!
First Day of School Traditions
Have a special breakfast.
Our breakfast typically consists of eggs in some format. For the first day of school, I like to add waffles or a cinnamon roll. It takes a little more prep but is always worth it!
Set the table.
One thing I plan to do this year is to set the table with plates for our breakfast. I love the idea of creating plates that look like apples or having a cute centerpiece in the middle of the table. Grace, Giggles, and Naptime has the cutest breakfast setup idea!
Write a note to your child.
Take some time to write a note for your child to read on the first day of school. You could put this on a card or in the first page of a journal. This is such a special way to speak the truth to your child.
Have a special after-school snack.
The after-school snack is a big thing around our house. My kids love this time! Do something a little extra special like cookies or donuts. You can set out some after-school conversation cards to use too.
Take a picture.
It is always fun to have the first day and last day of school pictures. I love using our boards each year for the photos. I suggest taking the photo before the school day starts because everyone is tired by the end of the day.
Have your child complete the first day of school interview.
Whether your child is homeschooled or going to school, it is always fun to do an interview to kick things off! These interviews are so much fun to add to memory books. Get your free download of the interview.
Set out a little special gift for your child.
I always love to set out a little special item for my kids. It can be some school supplies and a small toy or a little treat. It is always fun to do something special as they enter new routines.
What about you? What are your first day of school traditions?
We have a special breakfast and then I take their picture next to the same chalkboard easel we’ve been using since the kids were in preschool. I write their favorite things and what they want to be when the grow up on it. Then the kids go on a scavenger hunt around the house for the school supplies we’ve purchased for them. It’s simple but they love it- even my 6th grader. Then for lunch, I pack their lunchboxes, even though we’re obviously not going anywhere since we homeschool. We always do some kind of “get to know me” or “all about me” activity. After all of that, we start on the real curriculum for a bit before calling it a day.
I love your special after school snack idea! Adding that to the day for next year. Thanks!
Such good ideas! My kids love a fun scavenger hunt so we will have to do that.
