How to Declutter Your Garage
Do an initial look.
Before you start going through everything, take an initial look at the space. Is there anything that needs to be removed that is obvious? If so, remove it. This can help give you some momentum moving forward.
Go through everything in your garage.
This may feel overwhelming but it is the best way. You may want to do this in segments. Things to consider getting rid of:
- Broken outside toys
- Bikes that are too small
- An excessive amount of duplicate tools
As you are going through everything sort items into trash/donate pile and keep pile.
Decide how you want to use your garage.
Is your garage going to be an at-home gym? Will you park your cars in it? Is it a workshop? Think through what you want the purpose to be before you start organizing.
Store like things together.
You may have different zones like this:
- Outside Toys
- Tools
- Rakes/Shovels
- Gardening
- Car Care Items
Use vertical storage.
The great thing about the garage is that you can easily use vertical storage. We were recently given some shelves that have been perfect to store items on. Hooks to hang chairs or bikes are another great option.
As you declutter your garage, remember to let go of stuff you are not using. Give yourself time with this project and embrace your version of organized.
