Declutter the space first.
Before you get started, you must declutter the space. Follow the simple decluttering process of going through everything in the room. Sort the items into piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash. Once the space is cleared of the clutter, you can move forward.
Create landing zones.
Landing zones are key within your home. In your laundry room, you will want landing zones for:
- Lost Socks
- Lint/Trash
- Dirty Clothes
- Clean Clothes
- Iron
- Detergents
Determine now where these will be. If you have shelves or cabinets these are great to utilize!

Have a system for dirty laundry.
What is your system for dirty laundry? Do your family members have baskets in their rooms and then bring those to the laundry room? Do you have one main laundry basket in the space? Come up with a plan now.
We have a 3-section laundry sorter in the room. Everyone knows to put their dirty clothes in here. Since all of our rooms are on the same floor as the laundry room, this is not complicated.

Once you determine your systems, make sure to go over it with your family members.
Have a system for clean laundry.
Now you need to determine your system for clean laundry. This is often where people struggle the most. The clothes get cleaned but not folded or put away.
One thing that can be helpful is to have drawers or bins for every family member. Once the clothes are cleaned, they can go in the appropriate bin for that family member to grab and put away.
For our family, we hang up a lot of clothes so it makes it easier to quickly put them away.
Use mess-free laundry detergent.
One of my favorite laundry detergents is from Earth Breeze and it is the best because it is mess free! You can use their laundry sheets and save space plus mess! I love the Free and Clear sheets as our family tries to avoid scents. They also have a great program where for every pack you buy, they donate 10 loads to the customer’s chosen charity!
