The little moments of life are the ones that bring me the greatest joy. Whether it is a picnic outside, eating dinner with my husband after the kids are asleep, or flowers picked from outside; these moments are all like gold. A couple years ago, I decided it was time to capture these precious memories.
Using a simple mason jar and pieces of paper, our family has been able to capture the memories that are most important to us. Over the course of a year, we fill the jar with our memories written on pieces of paper. It is amazing to open this at the end of the year and reflect on the past year. Many times, there were some of the most beautiful moments that I had forgotten. I remember last year, opening the jar and reading about my daughter’s first steps. Kids grow and change so quickly and many times, we loose sight of how much they change in the midst of our busy lives.
Creating a memory jar is a simple way that you can do to collect moments over the year.
The first year, I started in August and wrote down memories until the end of the year. It is never too late to start this tradition!
You can set up your own memory jar following these steps:
1. Get a jar such as a mason jar.
2. Put a label on it or leave it blank.
3. Set the jar plus some blank sheets of paper near it in a central location in your house.
4. Fill the jar with memories over the year and at the end of the year, read through all of the memories.
Since I know we are all busy and sometimes adding just one more thing to our never ending list can seem a bit overwhelming, I also added a memory jar kit to my shop. When you purchase the kit, you receive a mason jar with a memory label, pen, blank memory cards, and muslin bag to keep the memories at the end of the year. There is also the option to purchase just the label and memory template to print out at home to use with your own jar. Go here to see these options.
I cannot wait to open our jar from 2016 and see what memories were made. It is a gift to remember the moments from the past year and reflect on all that God has done.
How will you remember the moments of this new year?
