Struggling to get your kids to eat vegetables? You are not alone. Kids are notoriously picky eaters, however that does not mean you are doomed! Check out these tips to help you today!
Getting my kids to eat vegetables has been a journey. My husband always told me how he was a picky eater and he did not eat salad until he met me. He really wanted our kids to be healthier. From the beginning, we decided to encourage our kids to eat vegetables. While there are some they are not fans of, over all I have to say we have some vegetable loving kids!
Since I know this can be a big struggle, I thought I would share some of my best tips! Here we go!
Let them pick out new vegetables to try.
The next time you are at the grocery store, let each of your kids pick out one vegetable to try. If they are old enough, have them help you research ways to cook it. Then try the vegetables. One of the most practical ways to get kids to eat vegetables is by simply trying new things. You never know, your family may find a few favorite!
You could even have a whole night set aside for vegetable tasting. Make it fun and your kids will start to see that vegetables can be fun!
Try serving vegetables with dip.
I know this may not be the healthiest option, but I am not going for perfection here. Carrots and ranch. Cucumbers and ranch. These are all favorites for my kids! Sometimes when my kids are starting to get hungry and I am trying to make dinner, I will set out a plate of carrot sticks and ranch. I am fine if they are snacking on some vegetables before dinner!
Read about eating vegetables.
Whenever we are working on something in our house, we like to take time to read about it. As we read through different stories that are speaking truth and lessons, my kids always seem to remember what was taught and start to apply what was taught.
Our current favorite book that talks all about healthy eating is This book is hilarious and shares such practical lessons with kids. It was a big win with all three of my kids! Pssst… make sure to head over to Instagram to enter to win a copy.
Keep serving vegetables.
I know everyone says to keep offering the food to your kids, but there is a lot of truth to this! One day my daughter loves something and the next she claims she does not! Offer up vegetables with lunch and dinner and for snacks. Over time, the more your kids are exposed to these food, the more they will start to like them.
One of our favorite ways to serve up vegetables is to bake or steam them. Add a little garlic or cheese and kids will love them!
Keep prepped vegetables on hand.
A friend of mine taught me to slice and cut up carrots as soon as I get home from the grocery store. Then you store them in an airtight container with some water in the fridge. This way, they are ready for snacking! I have tried this and it works! When I do not do this, the carrots just stay in the bag until they are eventually beyond use.
Start a vegetable garden.
Gardening has been a constant learning process for us. I blame it on the fact that neither of us are local to South Carolina. However, it may just be that we are really not the best at it! Either way, we continue to try! One of our successful vegetables is always Cherry Tomatoes. These are easy to grow and they are perfect for snacking! My kids absolutely love these tomatoes! Depending on where you live, you may be able to grow a fall/winter garden. If not, plan for a spring one! For more gardening information, make sure you are following along with my friend Lacey!
I hope these tips help your family start to enjoy more vegetables!
