Lately, I have been a mission on making small spaces work well for our family of five. While we do dream of living out with more space one day, our current living situation is a smaller home. Instead of being frustrated with having a smaller space, I am determined to stay positive. It is amazing what you can do with a small space!
One way we are making small spaces work is by learning to use our storage space well. Since our home does not have a garage, we have to make the space we do have work. Our storage space is a small section at the back of our house.
For far too long this space has been a constant mess. It never stayed clutter free. I would organize only to find it cluttered soon after. Within a few days, the clutter would be there. This is always a sign to me that the space is not working well.
Since summer is coming, I know we will be outside even more and I want this small space to work well for our family.
Here are some simple steps for making small spaces work when focused on a storage area.
Empty the space
Whenever I am having to focus on a space, I like to empty it of everything. This helps me to see what we have. For example, when I did this I found a baseball helmet and old training wheels. Both are items we no longer need so can be donated.

Use wall space
One key trick for making small spaces work well is to use wall space. This helps keep items off the floor and you can store more in a smaller space. I like to use shelves and hooks within a storage space.
- Set up shelves- We have a couple shelves that are already up. On these shelves we keep smaller items such as gardening supplies and car items.
- Use hooks- I plan to implement the idea of using hooks in our space this summer. I think they could help in so many ways.
Make sure everything has a home
Clutter starts to build when things do not have a home. Find a home for every little thing. Then take it one step further and share this with your family. A goal for this summer is to continue to teach my kids to put things back where they belong.
When we are making sure everything has a home, we like to store similiar items together. This way you are not searching all over for one thing but looking in the designated space.
