I struggle to declutter and organize books because we have such a love for them. However, this past month, I decided to focus on organizing all of the books in our house. Between my love for books, my husband being an English teacher, and three kids, we have an abundance of books flowing through our home. Which means we have lots and lots to declutter and organize!
3 Steps to Organize Books
Gather all of the books together.
I went through the books in groups of kids and then my husband and my books. It is helpful to see all of the books in one spot as you get ready to declutter and organize.
Go through the books and sort.
Once the books are all together, go through them and sort. As usual with decluttering I have a keep, donate, and trash pile. It is very rare that I throw a book away, but we have had cases where a book is beyond repair.
I tend to keep more children’s books than our books. Recently, I sorted out a lot of baby/toddler books. I donated a lot of them and then kept a couple.
The boys helped me go through their books and were able to tell me if they liked/disliked books. They were excited to be able to donate their books to other kids!
Determine where the books will be.
We have a few different locations for books:
Cube Shelf- One square holds coloring books and another square holds seasonal books.
Bookshelf in living room- This bookshelf holds my husband and my books. I keep books that I absolutely love and then donate other ones to friends. We have a lot of my husband’s English books, some classics, and my Bible college and counseling books.
Book Holder- I found this at a thrift store and painted it. It sits next to my daughter’s bed to hold her books.
Bookshelf in boys’ room- All of the boys books are here. We keep library books on the top (in my daughter’s room they sit on her dresser).
Don’t forget to also go through coloring books, cookbooks, and magazines!
