While I love shopping at the stores down the road, I also have started to love shopping with purpose. There is something so powerful about buying a gift that you know has a story of hope and promise behind it. Purchasing these gifts, reminds me there is so much I can do to make a difference right from my home.
Often the brokenness of the world can overwhelm me. I want to make a change, but then I feel stumped as to where to start. Recently, I read John 1:5, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” What hope this verse gives! Instantly, I was reminded that there is always light and I felt like I was able to see more clearly the ways others are being a light around me.
As I looked around, I started to see more than just people, but also people running shops who are shining in the darkness. Today, I wanted to highlight six shops that are shining in the darkness. When shopping with purpose, these are some of my favorite shops.
6 Shops for Shopping with Purpose
Better Life Bags
As soon as I heard about Better Life Bags, I was drawn in because of where they are located. I grew up on the western side of Michigan, but everyone knew about the struggles in Detroit. Rebecca and the entire Better Life Bags team is shining light in Detroit as they provide jobs for women and ultimately a better life. The fun part of Better Life Bags is that you can design your own bag!
The entire story of Noonday is inspiring as the founder, Jessica Honegger held the first Trunk Show in her home as a fundraiser to help fund her family’s adoption. All of the jewelry is absolutely beautiful and I love the story behind each piece. With Noonday, you are not just buying jewelry, you are helping create a sustainable life for others.
As a coffee lover, I have always drank my coffee regularly without even thinking about the story behind it. Yet, over the past few years, I have started to realize there is often more to the story. Suddenly, I knew I had to be wiser in my purchasing. Westrock Coffee works with farmers in developing countries like Rwanda and Tanzania to ensure that every farmer is paid a fair price, on time for the coffee they grow. The farmer partners, often women, are providing for their families and with Westrock, able to have access to support and trainings for their business.
You can purchase your coffee, and even K-cups. There are also subscription services. Want a cute gift idea for a friend? How about a cute mug with a K-cup inside?!
Clothed in Victory
I met the founder of Clothed in Victory when I attended a conference a few years ago. Instantly, I was drawn in by her vision and focus on truly loving others. With Clothed for Victory their focus is to affirm your worth, and proclaim God’s victory over your life. This is an ethically made clothing brand that is perfect for my shopping with purpose.
A really cute gift would be some of the Put on Love Notecards. If you have a daughter, I think the You are Beautiful Zip Pouch and Mirror Decal would be a very meaningful gift and even fun stocking stuffers!
Confession- I have a huge weakness for a cute notebook, and May Designs has some lovely ones. However, my love for this shop goes beyond the cuteness. I love that 100% of proceeds from their Rise Art and Lucky Few collections go to support Down Syndrome awareness and education in honor of Mica’s beautiful son Jackson!
Three Little Warriors
My sweet friend Karla started Three Little Warriors out of her passion to make a difference. The mission of Three Little Warriors is, “to equip, train, and empower survivors with the skills needed to earn a living wage and through employment/professional skill development, empower men and women to break free from the ongoing cycle of slavery.” Every product is designed and handmade in the USA by a team of artists and moms who desire to use their gifts to help end human slavery. Everything is absolutely beautiful and would make for the perfect gift for a mama of a little one.
Aren’t you inspired by these six shops?! I can already think of so many beautiful gift combinations using these gifts! I love that by partnering with these shops, we can make a difference. This Christmas, consider shopping with purpose to help weave stories into the gifts you give.
