Over the past couple years, I have seen the power of setting goals. Whether it is a goal for my marriage, family, or blogging, it is incredible what can happen when there is focus and intention. With my love for goals, I intentionally focused on setting yearly and monthly goals this past year. Throughout the course of the year, I have learned a few things about setting goals.
Tips for Setting Goals
Goals need to be measurable.
Whenever I set a goal, I ask myself, “how can I measure this?” When you are setting goals be specific. This past year, I decided in January that I would run a 5K so over the course of the year, I have been running on a regular basis. This Saturday, I am running the 5K. Looking back, I can ese the steps that were taken to accomplish the goal.
Goals need accountability.
It does absolutely nothing to write down a handful of goals for 2018 and then never look at them again. There needs to be action steps and accountability. I have learned to work on this by having a friend I meet with on a monthly basis. We go over our goals every month together and talk about what worked and what did not.
Goals need to be written down and looked at on a regular basis.
At the beginning of the year, I write down my goals. Then I also write down monthly goals at the start of every month. writing the goals down and then looking at them every month and every week. While I have tried different goal setting worksheets and workbooks, nothing really was exactly what I needed. Naturally, that resulted in me creating my own set. I have loved writing out my goals for 2018 using my Intentional Goal Setting Sheets. If you want to have your own set, just click here to grab a set for free (you will also receive more information on how these sheets work for me!).
Goals need to be covered in grace.
The unexpected things happen and we need to have grace with our plans and goals. As a mom, I am learning to let go of my expectations and this folds out into all areas of life. If a goal is not accomplished, I look at the goal honesty and ask myself: “ Do I just need to move the goal to the next month when life is calmer, or is this goal just not good for this season at all?” Be honest with yourself about your season, and have grace.
Goals are helpful for all people.
Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a working mom, I highly recommend making goals. Setting goals helps give you focus and move forward with your life.
