Want to simplify your home but you don’t know where to start? Check out these helpful tips.
If you want to simplify your home but it feels overwhelming, you are not alone. It can be overwhelming to think through it all but it does not have to be.
The trend of minimalism and simplicity have been popular for a while now. One thing that is important to realize is that minimalism does not have to be a one size fits all.
Ways to Simplify Your Home
Take a walk through your home.
Grab a trash bag or laundry basket and take a walk through your home. We are not going to open cabinets or closets right now. All you need to do is to take a minute in each room of your home and look around. If there is anything on a shelf, a table, a wall, etc that you do not love or does not fit the space put it in the basket.
Do this in each room. When you are finished look at everything in your basket. For the items that you do not even like, put them in a bin or bag to donate or resell. For the items that you like but they need a new home, put them in another bin. You may be able to use these in a different space in your home.
Go through each room at a time to simplify your home.
Now that you have the initial surface decluttering finished, decide which room you will start in for a thorough decluttering. I like to take decluttering one room at a time.
As you declutter, only keep what you love and use.
If you love a whole bookcase of books, leave them! By simplifying, we are focusing on creating a home that is a haven we love. Everyone is going to have different items in their homes that express this.
When you sort through the room, remove the items you no longer love or need. You can then donate or resell these.
This process will take time but you can do it. If you have a lot to declutter, break it down one room a day.
Regularly let go of items.
Instead of decluttering when things get bad, start to regularly declutter. Once you get the hang of it, you will see how simple it is. If an item is no longer needed, you can let it go. Keep an ongoing donations bin to help with this.
Schedule a quarterly check-in.
Using your planner or calendar on your phone, put a reminder to go through your home every quarter. This will be helpful too as you will need to check the status of your child’s clothing.
